Named for after Alberta’s first premier, Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the southwest community of Rutherford is bordered by Ellerslie Road to the north, James Mowatt Trail SW (111th Street) to the east, and 127 Street to the west. Two of the schools in this area of southwest Edmonton’s cachement are located right in the community of Rutherford; Johnny Bright School and Monsignor Fee Otterson Elementary/Junior High School.

At the southeastern corner of the community of Rutherford is a strip of commercial conveniences called Rutherford Gate that includes a Mac’s Convenient Store, an ESSO gas station, a medical clinic, a pharmacy, Serene Radiance Laser Centre, Rutherford Physical Therapy, and Rutherford Veterinary Clinic.
Across the Ellerslie Road border of the southwest community of Rutherford is a small shopping hub called Heritage Valley, home to a Mac’s, a Liquor Depot, Imagine Dental, Shape MD, Physical Therapy Sports Performance Centre, and Shear Styling Studio.
Following Ellerslie Road a little ways east and residents of Rutherford will pass by an 80 Flavours Premium Ice Cream stand before reaching Ellerslie Corner at the intersection of Ellerslie Road and 111 Street. Across from Century Park, Heritage Village is the first among a row of commercial hubs. This commercial row includes Heritage Square, Heritage Links and Heritage Lane.
